Sifnos: the most delicious Greek island

The Greek island of Sifnos in the Cyclades has the most sizzling food scene in the #Mediterranean right now.

On most Greek islands, what hits you first is the light, bouncing off burnished rocks or painting the horizon a fuzzy peach. On wildly beautiful Sifnos in the Cyclades, it's the aroma of orange-and-anise biscuits drifting down whitewashed lanes; pockets of sage and oregano in wind-chiselled valleys; blasts of brine as sea urchins are prised open, orange roe scooped up with salty fingers.

In summer, stepping off the #ferry at Kamares, the island's unassuming little port, there is also the unmistakable perfume of sizzling calamari and suntan oil. If it is early afternoon, I stroll along the hot boardwalk to the sandy beach of Agia #Marina and dive straight into the sea. The octopus bruschetta and aubergine chips at the #Isalos beach bar taste even better when I have sand between my toes. As a lilac haze settles over the bay, I toast my return to the island with a cucumber #Margarita.

Sifnos, the island of flavours. Unique traditional villages, organized or #secluded beaches, and 227 churches spread around the island are waiting to be discovered.

A few kilometers away from the town lies the traditional settlement of #Artemónas, famous for its neoclassic mansions and its outstanding panoramic view of the island. Some of the most famous restaurants and patisseries of Sifnos will welcome you here with fresh homemade cookies and hot doughnuts. If you need to spend a relaxing vacation, then Artemónas is the ideal place to book your accommodation.

Kastro

The historic settlement of Kástro (meaning “castle”), inhabited since ancient times, is built over the ruins of ancient Sífnos, on an abrupt rock with a breathtaking view of the sea. A beautiful outdoor museum and one of the most picturesque villages in the island, Kástro stands out for its old houses with the wooden balconies, the ancient columns and the narrow courtyards.

The visitor still enters the village from "lozies", the castle’s old entrances. In the past, these arcade-like entrances were used as war towers in order to protect the settlement. The houses in the front, built one next to another, used to be inhabited by lower class people, whereas the inner, and more protected part of the settlement was occupied by the upper class. Admire the picturesque little church of “Eftamártyros” (Church of Seven Martyrs), perched on a rock that seems to rise from the sea, and don’t forget to visit the Archaeological #Museum.

Swim in crystal-clear waters.

Whether cosmopolitan or secluded, all the beaches in Sífnos offer to the sun-loving tourists azure waters and sun-drenched sandy beaches. Kamáres, the port of the island, is a sandy beach with trees and beach bars; Platís Yialós is the most cosmopolitan and buzzing beach in the island, whereas next to it lies Vathí, a sandy beach with shallow waters and many tavernas where you can enjoy fresh fish. The rocks in Chrisopigí, where also the homonymous Monastery proudly stands, are ideal for diving. If you’d like to rest under a cool shade, head to the next beach which is surrounded by salt water loving trees. If you find yourself in Kástro, follow down the path to “Eptá Mártyres”, and enjoy a leisurely swim.

Discover the magic of the Peloponnese: Arcadia, the utopia of Greece

When the harmony of nature seems like a #utopia, then be sure that you are in Arcadia. The heart of the #Peloponnese. #Greece.

The images you see are an #idyllic vision of the Greek countryside. The world around us takes on mythical proportions here. In the rivers and trees, Fairies and #nymphs are enchanted by the flute of the god #Faunus. In this melodic song of life.

In today's episode we will discover the impressive waterfalls of Lepida and the traditional village of Agios Ioannis or Orino #Astros. Untouched and authentic destinations of eastern Arcadia.

Do you like the video? click like and subscribe to discover magical destinations and exotic places.

The mountainous topography of this Greek province and the sparse rural population made the word Arcadia evolve into a poetic meaning. A version of paradise, though only in the sense that it is the abode of supernatural beings and not an afterlife for mortals.

During the Renaissance, #Arcadia was a popular artistic subject, both in the visual arts and in literature, and this name came to be used for any idyllic location or paradise.

Our tour starts from the village of Agios Ioannis. It is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of the mountain at an altitude of 725 meters. It has many churches and traditional fountains.

While exploring the alleys of the settlement you will immediately feel serenity and the feeling of intimacy, as if you have walked here again. Around you traditional buildings, hospitable guesthouses, taverns with delicious flavors, plane trees and flowers.

Saint John of Arcadia or Agios Ioannis is mentioned for the first time in 1435, while its contribution to the Greek revolution of 1821 was significant.

A huge surprise awaits you three kilometers south of the settlement! The double #waterfalls of Lepida. Protected area on Mount Parnon with important flora! As you can see, the shots are just breathtaking!

The beautiful hiking trail prepares you perfectly for the wonder of nature that follows. Blue #lakes, impressive geological formations and this unique sound of crystal clear waters. The eternal power of flow that acts as a purification for the human soul.

Do not hesitate to take a refreshing swim at the cold water, while in the gorge are often organized canyoning descents and rappel.

The ideal time to visit is spring and late autumn.

Nearby the imposing medieval castle of Oria or Estella which means Star. It is built on a "natural pyramid" that makes it inaccessible, while its reputation is accompanied by legends of beautiful princesses and fierce battles.

Let yourself wander in the ancient paths of Arcadia filling your batteries with energy, do sports, leave behind all the stress, sorrows and thoughts…

On this trip you will feel the certainty that the Nymphs and the God Faunus are still here. Behind the trees, inside the caves and under the waters of the rivers. They protect nature and welcome the passengers.

The land of the Peloponnese will reward you richly, as long as you are surrendered to its sweet song. #Paradise has a name and is located in Greece!

ARCADIA (Arkadhía), the heartland province of the Peloponnese, contains some of the most beautiful landscapes in Greece. Dramatic hills are crowned by a string of medieval towns, and the occasional Classical antiquity. Beautiful Karítena is a picture-postcard hill town, but the best area of all is around Stemnítsa and Dhimitsána, where walkers are rewarded with the luxuriant Loúsios Gorge. Another hill town, Andhrítsena, attracts archeology buffs with the nearby Temple of Bassae, still spectacular though tented for restoration. En route, if approaching from Trípoli, you may also pass through Megalópoli, both mainly transport hubs.

North of Megalópoli, the best of Arcadia lies before you: minor roads that curl through a series of lush valleys and below the area’s most exquisite medieval hill towns. The obvious first stop is lofty Karítena. Then the route to the northwest winds farther up around the edge of the Ménalo mountains to the delightful towns of Stemnítsa and Dhimitsána, from either of which you can explore the Loúsios Gorge, including the remote site of ancient Gortys and the stunning eleventh-century Ayíou Ioánnou Prodhrómou Monastery (commonly abbreviated to Prodhrómou), as well as additional ancient monasteries on up the gorge. To the west there’s the hill town of Andhrítsena and nearby the ancient Temple of Bassae. Having your own transport is pretty essential here, though there are limited buses from Trípoli and Megalópoli. The hill towns also offer plenty of great places to stay.

If you suddenly see the statue of Miguel de Cervantes, then be sure that you are in #Nafpaktos or #Lepanto as it was called in the Middle Ages. Stone and light, earth, sun and sea, houses and colors are intertwined in a cheerful Greek dance that you can not resist. Here the transportation can be done only on foot, by boat or with the traditional donkeys. Hydra is a heroic and cosmopolitan corner of Greece!

Greek blue, lacy shores, Byzantine castles, palaces, Italian air, aromas and flavors, Ionian temperament! What more could one ask for? But of course the Easter atmosphere! During the holy days of Easter, customs and traditions unique in the world such as botides pot throwing are revived on the island.

Athens Riviera: exotic Eden beach, Saronida - snorkeling experience in G...

Welcome to the riviera of Athens, Greece. Feel an exotic experience while exploring the crystal clear waters of Attica and doing snorkeling. Eden beach is located 46 kilometers south of Athens center, in Saronida, Anavyssos. A magnificent protected bay with crystal clear waters, with the characteristic Black Rock dominating, it has been awarded the Blue Flag for 20 consecutive years. At Eden Beach, the heart of cosmopolitan entertainment beats, while gazing out over the beautiful Attica sunset. Snorkeling (British and Commonwealth English spelling: snorkelling) is the practice of swimming on or through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped breathing tube called a snorkel, and usually swimfins. In cooler waters, a wetsuit may also be worn. Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for extended periods with relatively little effort and to breathe while face-down at the surface. Snorkeling is a popular recreational activity, particularly at tropical resort locations. It provides the opportunity to observe underwater life in a natural setting without the complicated equipment and training required for scuba diving. It appeals to all ages because of how little effort is involved and is the basis of the two surface disciplines of the underwater sport of finswimming. Snorkeling is also used by scuba divers when on the surface, in underwater sports such as underwater hockey and underwater rugby, and as part of water-based searches conducted by search and rescue teams. Essential equipment includes the snorkel for breathing, and a diving mask or swimming goggles for vision. Swimfins for more efficient propulsion are common. Environmental protection against cold, sunburn and marine stings and scratches is also regionally popular, and may be in the form of a wetsuit, diving skins, or rash vest. Some snorkellers rely on waterproof sunscreen lotions, but some of these are environmentally damaging. If necessary, the snorkeller may wear a weightbelt to facilitate freediving, or an inflatable snorkelling vest, a form of buoyancy aid, for safety. Underwater photography has grown in popularity since the early 2000s as waterproof cameras became affordable to recreational users. Many snorkelers now carry a waterproof camera with them while they snorkel and may record photographs or video clips and later share them on social media platforms or post them to other websites. This mass of documentation has enormous scientific potential, as millions of tourists are able to cover greater areas than professional scientists whose field-study time is limited. Various citizen science programs have emerged to realize this potential. Thus underwater photographs of natural subjects become database records of geo-located and time-stamped species observations. The observed species may be identified by the contributor or by other website users or team members, depending on the platform. Various protocols for organization and self-directed study for snorkelers interested in natural science also exist. At Réunion island, these approaches have resulted in many new records and even the discovery of new species. Saronida (Greek: Σαρωνίδα) is a seaside resort village and former community in East Attica, Greece. It is part of Athens metropolitan area. Saronida is located on the Saronic Gulf coast, in the southeastern part of the Attica peninsula. It lies on the western foot of the Olympos hill. It is 2 km northwest of Anavyssos, 10 km south of Kalyvia Thorikou and 31 km southeast of Athens city centre. Greek National Road 91 (Athens - Sounio) passes through the town. Saronida is connected to Athens by bus services. Saronida in antiquity was an area of the Attic Municipality of Saronikos that was located on the coast of Trittya, according to the administrative division of Kleisthenos. Today it is a popular holiday community in Southeastern Attica, built on the shores of the Saronic Gulf, in the wider residential complex of Lavreotiki. The area presents significant tourist traffic and has a large number of summer homes due to its long and sandy beach. In recent years, however, more and more people choose it as their permanent place of residence. The center of the community is located in front of the Saronic Sea, at the junction of Sounio and Saronidos Avenues, from where the area becomes accessible. Saronida has an organized road plan that consists of semicircular roads that start from the hill and meet on the coastal road. The name comes from the Saronic Gulf, which overlooks the settlement. #Athens #exoticbeach #Greece #snorkeling #underwater #scuba #diving #saronida #eden

Serifos Greece: top exotic beaches, Cyclades

If you are looking for something essential this #summer, visit #Greece #Serifos. #Cyclades In the southeast corner of #Europe lies a beautiful country! It has thousands of islands and countless exotic beaches. Its inhabitants are the heirs of an ancient #civilization and have customs and traditions that go back in the depths of the centuries. That is why they will welcome you with a big smile, pride and a warm #hospitality! Do you like the video? click like and subscribe to discover #exotic beaches and places! In today's episode we will discover the best #beaches in Serifos and the rare beauty of the island! We are located in the western Cyclades. Serifos was the #island of #Danae and #Perseus, a legendary hero of the ancient Greek world. When you stand high on a rock and get lost in the endless view of the Aegean Sea, you have a unique feeling of fullness. #Greek blue, bright light everywhere, calmness and simplicity. Which gives you the power to become the hero of your own myths! We start with the beach of Agios Sostis. It is located 3 km east of Livadi, which is the port of the island. When you see the beach for the first time you will be excited, while a swim in its crystal clear waters will make you love it. You can get here by car, motorbike or for the more adventurous on foot. The picturesque chapel of #Agios #Sostis stands out. Here you will take endless photos. A big festival takes place here on September 6th and gathers the whole island! The golden sand and the sparkling clear blue waters give a tropical sense to this beach. The tamarisk trees offer natural shade, while the pier below the #church is ideal for diving and playing! On the opposite slope there is nCaved, a sample of bold architecture that combines bioclimatic technologies, automation and modern amenities. Two kilometers north lies Psili Ammos, another heavenly beach in the Cyclades! Desert lilies with all-white flowers, natural shade from clusters of trees, impressive rocks, shallow waters ideal for kids and then there is an impressive deep blue clear sea-bottom! In 2003, this beach, adored by thousands of visitors, was voted as the best in Europe! A fact that you can confirm with your own eyes! #Paradise has a name! It is located in Greece and this summer will offer you everything you need to make it truly unforgettable! For beauty, Serifos is up there with the Cyclades’ more famous islands – but it surpasses them for easygoing charm, which is why Athenians come here. That and the stylish places to stay How do you choose which Greek island to visit? There are thousands, and of course the most famous cannot be the best. For unspoilt beauty, you need a tip-off, and for one that has a little more life, you follow those in the know: the Athenians, and those smart hotel groups who seek out rarefied and spectacular destinations to woo their clientele. That the small and supremely chilled boutique hotel Coco-Mat has chosen Serifos in the western Cyclades is an indicator that this island has something special going on. The eponymous Greek interiors brand behind it makes indulgent but sustainable bedding and furnishings in Xanthi, north-east Greece, from wool, wood and seaweed, and its foray into hotels has a characteristically upmarket but rustic ethos. Not without influence is the influx of arty Athenians who have been short-breaking on Serifos, buying simple village homes and rural villas to create stylish holiday hideaways and bringing this craggy barren outpost a bit of edge. Where the cognoscenti trickle, the businesses that cater to them – the coffee shops, the cocktail lounges, shops selling expensive kaftans rather than retsina – will spring up. You can find a smattering here, but what makes Serifos irresistible, even to those who hate that kind of thing, is that it is incredibly low-key, confined really to the main town, Chora, whereas the rest of the island is as wild and raw as any tiny speck on the map you could hope to unearth. The best-known Cyclades – Mykonos and Santorini, 50 and 75 miles away – are drowning in chichi nightlife, luxury hotels and fine dining, and the tourist numbers to match. But charming, sleepy Serifos, with its unusually dramatic peaked landscape, outshines both, while its lack of an airport deters the crowds. Livadi is the Greece of 80s brochure tourism, a cheerful, taverna-lined suntrap for lollies and beach balls, grocery stores and yachties (of the Sunsail, not oligarch variety). For atmosphere Chora town, which tumbles from a southern hilltop like a lava flow of whitewash, is the place. Hand-painted arrows led us to the attractive square, paved in marble and packed with turquoise tables and chairs.
