Santorini, la cui forma oggi ricorda una mezzaluna, un tempo era un'isola rotonda e si chiamava Strongyli. Quando, dopo radicali cambiamenti geologici, la sua parte centrale crollò, la #civiltà #Cicladica iniziò a fiorire. Come puoi facilmente vedere, i riferimenti di Platone ad Atlantide hanno una somiglianza con l'#antica forma di Santorini. Un luogo fulgido e benedetto per via delle civiltà fiorite in questi suoli e forse maledetto a causa della vasta catastrofe naturale. Il mistero di Santorini non smetterà mai di affascinarci.

 

Girovagando per le strette vie in stile egeo dell'isola, si pensa che sia stato trasferito in un'altra epoca. Qui tutto è diverso e l'energia della terra è intensa. Non dimenticare che il #vulcano è ancora attivo.

 

Iniziamo con l'insediamento Emporio o Niborio, che è il villaggio più popolato di Santorini. Negli anni bui del Medioevo le incursioni dei pirati furono continue e implacabili. Per proteggersi, gli abitanti costruirono le loro case una accanto all'altra, integrate in corridoi labirintici, creando muri paralleli e uscite di fuga che inquadravano il castello locale. Il tradizionale insediamento di Emporio era quindi uno dei 5 castelli storici dell'isola.

 

Ai piedi della collina domina la torre dei Goulas, costruita probabilmente nel XV secolo, durante il periodo della dominazione veneziana. Da questa torre partiva un tunnel, che portava al #castello.

 

Sulla collina opposta si possono ammirare otto #mulini a vento tradizionali del XIX secolo e rovine bizantine.

Molti secoli fa Pyrgos aveva mura e un unico ingresso, il kastelloporta. Attraverso una costruzione speciale i locali potevano versare olio bollente sui nemici che stavano cercando di invadere. Questo edificio, che oggi non esiste, era chiamato scappatoia o killer. E in questo castello esisteva un sistema di gallerie sotterranee che servivano a proteggere e sfuggire agli abitanti in caso di bisogno.

Beautiful Karítena is a picture-postcard hill town, but the best area of all is around Stemnítsa and Dhimitsána, where walkers are rewarded with the luxuriant Loúsios Gorge. Another hill town, Andhrítsena, attracts archeology buffs with the nearby Temple of Bassae, still spectacular though tented for restoration. En route, if approaching from Trípoli, you may also pass through Megalópoli, both mainly transport hubs.

North of Megalópoli, the best of Arcadia lies before you: minor roads that curl through a series of lush valleys and below the area’s most exquisite medieval hill towns. The obvious first stop is lofty Karítena. Then the route to the northwest winds farther up around the edge of the Ménalo mountains to the delightful towns of Stemnítsa and Dhimitsána, from either of which you can explore the Loúsios Gorge, including the remote site of ancient Gortys and the stunning eleventh-century Ayíou Ioánnou Prodhrómou Monastery (commonly abbreviated to Prodhrómou), as well as additional ancient monasteries on up the gorge. To the west there’s the hill town of Andhrítsena and nearby the ancient Temple of Bassae. Having your own transport is pretty essential here, though there are limited buses from Trípoli and Megalópoli. The hill towns also offer plenty of great places to stay.
